Choosing the right Medicare plan impacts not only the quality of your life but — potentially — your lifespan as well. Unfortunately, making the wrong decision can be irreversible.
However, this article isn’t just for people who are approaching age 65. It’s also for their friends and family who want to help their loved ones through this critical decision.
Bick Insurance Consultants has over 30 years of experience helping clients with their Medicare decisions. We’d love to guide your friends or family members as well.
Here’s our process for helping our clients select the best Medicare plan at the right time.
Step 1: Education
Medicare is not complicated, but there are a lot of misconceptions out there.
Our first step is to clarify all the information you need to fully understand Medicare. It takes about 30 minutes to explain how Medicare works, the costs involved, the timing, and the differences between Medicare Supplement plans and Medicare Advantage plans.
We think a face-to-face meeting is the best way to communicate those details and ensure our clients’ questions are answered.
This step alone puts our clients in a much better position than the majority of the public. But we’re far from done.
Step 2: Analysis
Our second step is to help each of our clients choose the right enrollment timing and the right plan for their long-term needs.
The Right Timing
Contrary to popular belief, you are not required to switch to Medicare immediately upon turning 65. As long as a person has what the federal government calls “credible coverage,” there is no penalty for joining Medicare later.
If you already have an amazing health insurance plan with low premiums and fabulous benefits, it may be in your best interest to stick with that plan for now.
The Right Plan
We walk our clients through all of the options, so they can get their perfect plan. Medicare is not one-size-fits-all, and it may be difficult or impossible to switch to a better plan later.
The right plan could impact out-of-pocket costs, too. Under one plan, medications may cost $10 a month, but under another one, you could be paying $300 or even $1,000 a year.
We don’t expect our clients to be experts on these details. That’s our job. We stay up-to-date on any yearly changes that happen and pass along that information to our clients.
Step 3: Enrollment
While our clients could enroll themselves in Medicare online, we don’t recommend that. The intricacies can be complex, and making a mistake costs time, frustration, and sometimes even money.
Fixing errors on the application involves an hour-long call to make a physical appointment. Then people usually wait another hour to be seen for their appointment at the Social Security Office. Missing the window for enrollment because of long delays could mean you’re paying more out of pocket.
That’s why we help our clients walk through the enrollment process from A to Z.
Making the Referral
If you know someone who’s about to turn 65, we’d love to help them. We are licensed as insurance agents in many states so we can help local folks and those outside of Florida, too.
If you know us based on our quality service, ask your friend or family member if you can share their phone number with us. We’d be happy to give them a call directly.
We know (from personal experience!) how enthusiastic intentions to follow through with a recommendation can get derailed by distractions. And our goal is to put your loved one on the right path as quickly as possible.
